Work Experience fEB 26TH - 29TH
I went on work experience from the 26th to the 29th in Boston Scientific in Galway.
On the first day I arrived in at 7.10am and started work at 8.00. I spent my first day in one of the many offices in Boston. I spent about half an hour with a woman called Lorraine whose job was to issue work orders. After that I spent the rest of my day with a woman called Suzanne. I did mostly scanning and sorting out files and folders for her. I finished work at 4.45 that evening.
On the second day I started off the morning in the office again this time I was sorting files online and putting POs on the files that didnt have any. After break, I did some hyperlinking which was difficult at first until I got the hang of it. Afterwards I went with a man called Kevin to one of the many clean rooms. When we went in we had to suit up which involved putting on long white coats, hairnets, shoecovers then washing your hands thoroughly, drying them and putting on gloves. Men also had to put on beard masks. He showed me a brief video on what a stent does then gave me a tour around all the machines. He showed me they Synergy stent which in that clean room was getting a product applied. The product which aids healing in patients was being applied in two ways on different lines. In Synergy stent the stent is being rolled in the product which is a much more efficient way of applying the product. The other was of applying the product is by spraying the stent but a lot of product is wasted this way. The Synergy stent is a more expensive stent costing around €1000. The main buyers of this stent is richer countries particularly America. Majority of Irish patients would receive a Synergy stent. The cheaper stent costs around €500 to €700. It was very interesting looking at peoples different jobs and how vital they all are. One interesting job in particular was checking to see if the layer of product was evenly spread. I got to look through the microscope at the stent freshly sprayed with the product.
Afterwards I was shown around the microbiology lab. I was shown where they test for different bacteria on the stents. One persons job was to cut up freshly made stents then test them for any traces of a certain bacteria. If this bacteria was present on a stent that was used on somebody it would be fatal. If the bacteria was detected the entire batch of stents would have to be scraped costing the company millions. After dinner I went back to the office.
On the third day I went to metals. This is where they actually made the stents. I was shown how all the targets worked and what happened if there was an accident. Everybody was so nice there. I then worked on some spread sheets. I then spent the rest of the day doing scrap metal. This is where all the stents with something wrong are dumped. I had to sort the stents then dump them. This was really interesting because I got to see the stents up close.
Overall it was a really interesting experience to learn all about the different stents and how they are produced.
